CRYPTO ROLE GROWS IN RETIREMENT SAVINGS
Cryptos will play a larger role in retirement planning strategy, even among older investors, says Nigel Green, CEO of the deVere. The reason is because not only is Bitcoin already the best-performing asset of the decade, it will, due to its fixed supply, only continue to appreciate over the long-term. “In addition, crypto exposure can typically deliver a legitimate diversification tool – which is how investors can seize opportunities and mitigate risk, especially during periods of higher volatility,” he says. However, although the advisor has long been a crypto bull, he adds a note of caution when discussing cryptocurrencies. “As this year has proven again, the crypto market remains known for its volatility. Therefore, retirees or those on the cusp of retirement need to bear this in mind and not over-commit, as this could put the wider retirement strategy in jeopardy,” he says.

FLORIDA PREVENTS CONSIDERATION OF ESG
A Florida State Board of Administration resolution prevents the Florida Retirement System from including ESG (environmental, social, and governance) considerations in its investment management. A news release from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis says the resolution to updates fiduciary duties of the board’s investment managers and consultants as it “clearly defines the factors fiduciaries are to consider in investment decisions and states that ESG considerations will not be included in the state of Florida’s pension investment management practices.” It says this will prevent the tax dollars and proxy votes of the people of Florida from being commandeered by Wall Street financial firms and used to implement policies through the board room that Floridians reject at the ballot box. The resolution also instructs the board to “conduct a comprehensive review and prepare a report of the governance policies over the voting practices” of the state pension plan.

ALTERNATIVE CREDIT PRESENTS VIABLE OPTION
Some 95 per cent of pension fund and other institutional investors agree with the view that the bespoke nature of alternative credit presents a viable option for investors to make a positive social and environmental impact by educating smaller companies in the financing market, says a survey from Aeon Investments. Some two thirds believe that over the next two years real estate lenders will increasingly have closer ongoing engagement with borrowers through the life of the loans they originate, looking at the removal of harmful materials, monitoring of delivery of social housing goals, and mitigation strategies around flood risks, for example. As well, 76 per cent of institutional investors believe that between now and 2024 real estate lenders will increasingly offer much better terms to projects with exemplary ESG (environmental, social, and governance) credentials.
